The Most Disturbing Children’s TV Shows of All Time

Children’s TV shows have been teaching us the names of colors and the spellings of words for close to a century now. To wit, the first children’s film, The Blue Bird – a feature revolving around a magical hat and searching for the “bluebird of happiness” – was released in 1918. Unfortunately, not all programs that have followed have lived up to this innocent standard. Let us take a carousel into the past, through some of the more peculiar shows that have lit up TV screens. Here are our 8 most disturbing children’s TV shows of all time.

8. Boohbah (2003-2005)

Before jumping into this one, let’s evaluate the name, shall we? Boohbah. I don’t know about you, but when I hear “boohbah”, I think hit children’s series. After all, what’s more educational than overweight, star-shaped aliens sporting contraceptives for heads? Sure, Teletubbies wasn’t much to shake a stick at either, but this is something else.

7. “Kids Play Follow the Leader,” Sesame Street (1969)

This is a Sesame Street skit from the very first season. It’s about learning the concepts of “around,” “through,” and “under.” Of course it’s set in a construction site and consists of five year olds crawling under beams and through acid-infested pipes. At one point, a pail of junkyard water falls on a kid’s head. No biggy. The same kid also trips and drowns in junkyard garbage. Good message.
